Basal metabolic rate in the Yakut (Sakha) of Siberia.
Human indigenous circumpolar populations have elevated basal metabolic rates (BMRs) relative to predicted values; this metabolic elevation has been postulated to be a physiological adaptation to chronic and severe cold stress. The present study examines BMR in the Yakut, an indigenous high-latitude population from the Sakha Republic of Russia to determine (1) whether the Yakut show evidence of ...

15 صفحه اولThe Toda Hierarchy and the Kdv Hierarchy
McKean and Trubowitz [2] showed that the theory of the KdV equation ∂ ∂t g(x, t) = ∂ 3 ∂x 3 g(x, t) − 6g(x, t) ∂g ∂x (x, t). is intimately related to the geometry of a related hyperelliptic curve of infinite genus, the Bloch spectrum B g t of the operator L g t : ψ → d 2 dx 2 ψ(x) + g(x, t)ψ(x), where g t = g(x, t). As was known classically, B g t is independent of t, when g(x, t) evolves accor...

Duration and pitch in the vowel quantity distinction of Yakut: Evidence from spontaneous speech
This paper investigates instrumentally for the first time the binary vowel quantity opposition (short vs. long) in Yakut (or Sakha) on the basis of spontaneous production data from nine speakers. Acoustic measurements of vowels in disyllabic words showed a significantly shorter duration of short vowels than their long counterparts. Furthermore, f0 maxima and f0 slope showed effects of both quan...
